# Why Enterprises Need a Model Agnostic AI Strategy

Just about a month ago, Guild’s engineering team was heavily using Claude. Fast forward a couple of weeks, and much of that usage had shifted organically to Codex.

We don’t impose spending caps, and we didn’t ask anyone to switch. People started gravitating towards Codex simply because OpenAI’s newer models offered what they saw as better results at a lower cost.

You can see the shift in our internal spend chart. Early in the period, Anthropic (shown in orange) accounted for most of our daily spending. Toward the end, OpenAI (in purple) dominated the mix.

In the first week of September, Anthropic accounted for about **75% of our daily AI spend**, while OpenAI accounted for **14%**. By mid September , the chart suggests OpenAI’s share had reached **roughly 80%**, while Anthropic’s had fallen below **15%**. OpenAI gained approximately **65 percentage points of spending share in just two weeks**.

A series of individual decisions had changed our spending mix without a coordinated migration. If Anthropic delivers a more compelling option tomorrow, the same process could take us back in the other direction. And this all pointed to one reality:

**A company can become more dependent on AI while becoming less attached to any particular AI vendor.**

## Models change fast—your business doesn’t

Our spending shifted because our team found a better fit for its work. The same thing could happen again with the next model release.

The model that offers the best combination of quality, speed, and cost changes all the time. Your business processes, integrations, and operating requirements won’t. And your enterprise AI strategy needs to account for those differences.

In order for model selection to remain flexible, your infrastructure needs to be independent of the models it integrates.

The investment goes well beyond buying access to a model. Teams connect internal systems, define business rules, establish permissions, build evaluations, and refine workflows through experience.

If those investments become tightly coupled to a single provider, adopting a better model might require substantial refactoring. The cost of switching can easily become a reason to accept the status quo, even when another option would serve the business better.

Keeping that work reusable gives enterprises more freedom.

## Model flexibility powers agent optimization

Consider an agent that triages engineering issues. Even if the model changes, it should still use the organization’s routing rules, connect through approved integrations, and operate within the same permissions.

**The team should be able to carry those foundations forward while testing how the new model performs.**

And that testing matters. Models can interpret instructions differently, make different tool calls, and require different amounts of supervision. A cheaper model may need more retries; a more expensive one may complete the task with fewer steps.

Decisions should reflect the quality and total cost of completing real work.

This also creates room for more deliberate model choices across the organization. Different workloads can use different models, and teams can revisit those choices as their requirements and the available options change.

## Guild centralizes the foundations. You decide how agents get built.

**Your AI strategy should outlast your favorite model. **Guild helps enterprise leaders protect the value of critical production agents, regardless of how the inputs change over time.

- [Guild Insights](https://www.guild.ai/product/insights-dashboard) brings spending across connected providers into one view, with deeper visibility into agents running on Guild.[ ](https://www.guild.ai/blog/product/optimizer-announcement)
- [Guild Optimizer](https://www.guild.ai/blog/product/optimizer-announcement) uses production sessions and evaluations to test potential improvements and show their effect on cost and quality before teams accept a recommendation.
- And [Guild’s shared operational controls](https://www.guild.ai/platform) centralize credentials, permissions, human approvals, and audit trails. Reusable agents, skills, and integrations help teams preserve the capabilities they have already built as their model choices evolve.

**The enterprise advantage is the ability to benefit from better models while protecting the work already invested in making AI useful.**

Ultimately, transitioning to a new model should be a seamless update to trusted business workflows.
